Grand Innovation Challenge

Innovations are being sought to address the following challenges:

  1. Global Plastics
  2. Crime
  3. Climate Change/Environment
  4. Health

Attractive US Dollar Prizes are available.

Potential for scale up and major partnerships for roll out

Innovations could be novel software/methodologies/devices/products/services

Innovations will be judged based on Relevance; Creativity; Feasibility; Scalability


  1. All ideas must be novel to be eligible for the competition.
  2. Intent to participate (ITP) must be provided by February 23, 2018.  The submission should provide title, team members, and a 300-500 words outline about your innovation and the challenge it will address.
  3. Submissions should be sent to with Subject: Grand Challenge in order to be considered.
  4. The Grand Innovation Challenge is open to undergraduate and graduate students. A lecturer can serve as a mentor but may not be an active team participant.
  5. Students can work in teams comprised of 2-7 individuals.
  6. Students from any of the UWI campuses are eligible to enter, however, at least one member of the team must be an FST student.
  7. Teams whose submissions are within the spirit of the Grand Challenge will be notified  by March 9, 2018 to submit a  detailed proposal that describes their innovation. 
  8. Details of concepts and or prototypes are due by April 2, 2018 for shortlisting.
  9. Finalists will be invited to pitch their prototypes/concepts at UWI's own ‘Shark Tank' to a panel of industry experts on Thursday, April 26, 2018 during the Grand Innovation Challenge Session.
  10. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the session.
